The holiday season is busy, I get it. It’s easy to let your fitness goals go for the season and start back up in January. This year I’d still like to fit in workout time because it helps with my anxiety and overall health. I’ve been consistent for the past couple of months and I want to keep it going despite the busyness of the season. I’m sharing ideas for how to find time for fitness during the holidays.
- Look for holiday theme workouts in your city. Some fitness studios will have NYE workouts with special themes or DJs, for example. Many yoga studios have gratitude-themed yoga classes for Thanksgiving as well. One way to find classes is on EventBrite.
- Make it a date. Ask a friend or family member if he or she wants to run, take a class or go on a hike early one morning before the busy day begins. You’ll start the day on a positive note. This also helps you spend time with loved ones during the busy holidays.
- Schedule time for the workout in your calendar. Treat it as you would any other appointment. You have to prioritize workouts if you want to stick with them.
- Reward yourself for your hard work. Give yourself something to look forward to after the workout so you’re more likely to do it.
- Sign up for a holiday run and make it a family affair. You’ll make memories with loved ones while working out. Win-win. (Note: I realize some families would rather drink mimosas than run, but if yours is open to it, try a holiday run!)
- Take short, regular break from cleaning, work, or cooking to do some squats, pushups, burpees, lunges, crunches, etc.
- If you have kids, join a gym or studio with childcare, or incorporate them into the workout. Stroller Strides is an example of a class that you can bring your kids to in a nonjudgmental space.
One last tip: Don’t ever feel like you have to burn off your holiday meals with a workout. A workout shouldn’t be a punishment but rather self-care.
