A few months ago I began planning Addi’s Baby Shark-themed second birthday party. I ordered decorations and invitations in January and February before it became clear that friends and family would not be able to attend because of stay-at-home and social distancing orders. Her birthday fell on Easter Day this year, so I wanted to make the day special despite not being able to celebrate the way we originally intended. I’m sharing how we celebrating A’s 2nd birthday at home during “quarantine” as people are calling it, in hopes of showing others that you can still have a good time and make the birthday girl or boy feel special even under these circumstances.
Most of the decor was given to me by my aunt, who hosted a Baby Shark party recently and had leftover plates, napkins and other decor. I also picked up a Baby Shark candle, a clear Baby Shark balloon, shark paper straws and more plates from Party City (before I knew we wouldn’t need all of them). I found Baby Shark balloons (Doo Doo and the five sharks) on Amazon, along with a TWO Baby Shark topper that I lost. It was so pretty, though, so I’m sad I couldn’t find it. I also found Baby Shark edible cake decor stickers on Etsy. Graham picked up a 2 balloon and candle at Walmart one day.
I decided to try to make the cake, but I later realized I should have ordered one. We bought the wrong kind of cake mix, so it was an angel food confetti cake consistency and hard to put frosting on it. I originally intended for it to be Funfetti. I also didn’t realize you need to put the stickers on before the frosting starts to dry, so they didn’t stick that well. Addi loved it, though, and that’s all that matters. I won’t be quitting my day job to be a cake decorator anytime soon!
Sixteen of our family members were able to join our Zoom Baby Shark birthday party from Kentucky, Arizona, California and North Carolina. It couldn’t have gone better. It was so nice to see all of them and we had a fun time! We all sang Happy Birthday together and A loved it. One of their birthday gifts was even delivered during the party so we could open it in front of them.
In addition, the girls loved their Easter baskets, which I shared in a previous post. I picked up some family Baby Shark shirts that we love, too.
It was a special day. And even though these times are tough, it was reminder that we are lucky to be able to be home and try to stay as healthy as possible while also celebrating together. Family is everything.
