Welcoming a furry friend into your home is an exciting adventure filled with joy, companionship — and maybe a few challenges. A dog also comes with a significant shift in your daily routine and responsibilities. From modifying your living space to adapting your schedule and even altering your social life, there are several adjustments you’ll need to make when you get a dog. In this blog post, we will guide you through these changes, helping you transition smoothly into your new role as a pet parent.
You’ll need to make sure they get exercise
Dogs need to be walked at least once a day (and some dogs, especially larger ones or those with more energy, may need two or three walks a day), and if you don’t currently do much exercise, get ready to walk more — even if it’s raining.
The best thing to do is look at your routine right now and work out how you can fit in at least one walk (and maybe more). You might need to take your dog for a walk early in the morning before work, for example. If you work from home, however, you might have more flexibility in when you can take your walks.
Think about when in your schedule you’ll need to make adjustments.
You might need to adjust your space
A dog really does need its own space, and you’ll need to change your home around to accommodate that.
It will depend on the space you have, but ideally you’ll need to give your dog its space for its dog bed and room for its food and water bowls. Make sure you have other necessities, like toys, pills from pet supplement companies, and anything else that makes your pet comfortable.
You’ll have to be home more often
Your dog will miss you when you’re not there. After all, you’re their entire life.
So when you get a dog, you have to be there for it as much as possible. Yes, you might have responsibilities, but can you take your dog? If not, you’ll need a pet sitter or a trusted person to keep the dog company.
The benefits of having a dog far outweigh these negatives, though, and if you’re able to adjust your life to fit a dog in, you’ll find it’s well worth it.
