There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a live game. But when that game marks a historical moment, the experience is even better. That’s what my girls and I experienced on June 8 at the Chicago Red Stars game against Bay FC at Wrigley Field. This match was not just another game; it was the first time in 80 years that women’s professional sports graced the iconic ballpark.
The grounds crew worked tirelessly to transform Wrigley Field into a soccer field, covering part of the baseball diamond. The atmosphere was electric.
The crowd was a vibrant mix of people, but what stood out to me were the young girls and women. Their eyes sparkled with admiration and inspiration as they watched these powerful athletes take the field. It was a reminder of how far women’s sports have come and the impact they have on the younger generation. I loved seeing people wear T-shirts that read, “Everyone watches women’s sports.”
The rest of the crowd was equally as excited and passionate. The cheers, the chants, the roars of disappointment and applause — it was a shared experience. Though the Chicago Red Stars didn’t win, the energy was amazing and we had a blast.
Reflecting on the night, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the progress made in women’s sports, for the opportunity to witness such a historic event, for the joy and inspiration it brought to so many, and for the memories with my daughters.
