We recently made two easy landscape updates on our home’s front yard. It looked so plain before, and we knew we wanted to add some flowers to bring some life to the front of our house.
We first began by adding petunias around one of the trees in our yard. It had been such an eyesore, and I think this easy addition improved our curb appeal immediately and at a low cost. These are annuals, so we will have to do it again next year or replace them with perennials. Cleaning out this flower bed took some work because it was full of rocks, but it was all worth it! Doing any sort of update with our kids takes forever because they are running around and they want to help, which means things get messy. Most of the time these little yard updates take us multiple days, but that’s part of the fun as a family now!
The next part of the yard update was adding plants on the side/front of our house. We chose hostas because they have pretty purple flowers and they do well in shady areas, along with Bowles golden sedge, the yellow perennials next to them that really brighten up the space. To find the best plants for our yard, we simply asked someone at our local nursery to help us out. This small section was previously full of weeds or dying perennials that had been neglected when the house was empty. Some of the plants are small now but the hope is they will grow and fill in the area nicely. We might add more, but I like the improvement we have made so far.
In the backyard, Graham saved the grass. It had been full of patches and was dying when we moved in, but now it’s filled in nicely and he regularly maintains it. I’m sure it will only keep improving. We have another section of grass that needs a lot of work, but we recently picked up seed for shady areas in hopes that it will grow until we figure something out.
That’s our garden/yard update for now! We never got around to planting any veggies this year, unfortunately, but I hope we will next spring.
Do you work on your yard or garden yourself? What did you plant this year?
