A couple of weeks ago, my family and I received an invitation to Roald Dahl’s “The Enormous Crocodile” at The Studebaker Theater in Chicago. Presented by the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, the performance was held during the final weekend of the festival, but the show extends through Feb. 21.
I jumped at the chance to take my daughters to the musical, which is based on Roald Dahl’s book. Featuring puppets and talented performers, this show is entertaining, hilarious, and interactive for both kids and adults. It tells the story of a crocodile who is set on eating children through his “secret plans and clever tricks.”
Each performance is energetic and talented, and it was difficult to choose a favorite character, though for me it’s probably Trunky the Elephant, played by Precious Abimbola. The Enormous Crocodile was also captivating, performed by Chelsea Da Silva. I also enjoyed the performances by Jordan Eskeisa as Humpy Rumpy the Hippo and Marienella Phillips as Muggle Wump the Monkey. The monkey’s dance moves were especially great. Ciara Hudson was Roly Poly Bird, who I thought was a peacock the entire time. It’s a small but mighty cast. The costumes/puppets are well-made, and they offer some laughs as well.
The performance we attended was general admission, so we found four seats in the upper level, where we still had a good view of the stage. The set design was well-done, and I enjoyed that there was a DJ/sound person on stage and part of the show as well. The Studebaker Theater itself is located inside the Fine Arts Building and has been a part of the Chicago theatre scene since the late 1800s.
I highly recommend taking your family to see this musical and enjoy an afternoon of laughs.
Although the festival is over, the performances will continue through Feb. 21. Tickets are still available, ranging from $39.50 to $71.50 per adult (plus $9.50 fee) and $26 to $56 per child (plus $9.50 fee). You can also get a family box for $409. Discounts are offered for groups and students, too.
