One of the many family-friendly activities we enjoyed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was a quick walk to Munising Falls in Munising. From the trailhead it’s only 800 feet to the waterfall on a paved path, making it doable for families with young kids. The trail is also dog-friendly, just keep your pet on a leash and pick up any waste.

Munising Falls is in the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, which is part of the U.S. National Park Service and a must-see in the area! There are also many other waterfall hikes in the area, but we chose this one because it was easy to do with a toddler and preschooler. You can walk along Munising Creek to the base of the waterfall or take the stairs up the canyon for a higher view of the 50-foot Munising Falls. As always, stay on the marked trails.

Our 5-year-old had no problem at all with the length of the walk, and our 1-year-old stayed in her carrier. We didn’t bring our dog, Capone, because we had boarded him for one night so we could go on a cruise. He joined us for the rest of the trip, though.

At the trailhead you’ll find a small gift shop and ranger talks, as well as restrooms and a water fountain. Be sure to wear insect repellant; the mosquitos were intense! There was no fee for parking.
Have you been to Munising Falls or Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore?
Note: I’ll soon be sharing more family-friendly activities in the Au Train and Munising areas. This post will be updated with links as they go live.
