Our family is still practicing social distancing despite the state of Illinois reopening gradually. To get out of the house, though, we’ve been enjoying family picnics at Skokie Lagoons. We’ve done this several times lately and it’s been a welcome change of pace. The world is so heavy right now, so it’s so nice sit in the sunshine, feel the breeze and watch the birds and other wildlife as we eat a meal together.

It’s been a popular place to visit lately and you’ll notice many cars parked along Forest Way, but despire this you can still find plenty of space to socially distance. At least, you should. We have not had any problems staying away from others while enjoying the outdoors. We like to set up next to the water. Many others like to fish near Willow Road and Forest Way, but we do not go near the crowds. Signs throughout share the restrictions on fishing, which you can do with a license. Many people also bring kayaks and other small boats.
One thing to note is that there appears to not be any portable restrooms in the area right now. The picnic tables are also closed, so bring a blanket and find a space elsewhere. Also, please pack your garbage and carry it out. We have seen trash left behind throughout the lagoon area and it saddens us. It also doesn’t appear that the trash is picked up from the trash cans that often, so if you can, take it home and dispose of it there.
