I’m in a giggling cult. It’s called Giggly Squad and it’s a podcast hosted by Paige DeSorbo and Hannah Berner. If you’re a reality TV fanatic like I am, you might know them from “Summer House” on Bravo, or from Hannah’s Netflix comedy special, “We Ride at Dawn.” Months ago I purchased a ticket to see Giggly Squad live at Chicago Theatre. Little did I know then that I would need laughs in my life more than ever that week.
The show was Nov. 10, just days after the election and during a difficult time in my personal life. I went to the show alone since I don’t really know anyone in Chicago who listens to them.
My first struggle was not knowing what to wear. Paige and Hannah had suggested that the girls dress up or wear clothes they feel good in to come to the show. I unfortunately do not feel great in most of my clothes right now, but I ended up wearing a velvet jumpsuit and black boots. I loved seeing the younger girls wear blazers, heels, and tights — all Paige-coded.
Since it’s basically a live podcast (that’s not recorded, to my knowledge), there is no opener. The show was scheduled to start at 8 p.m. but it started about 15-20 minutes past that. Chicago Theatre has long lines for the bars, so it’s a good thing the start was a bit delayed so people could get to their seats. Once Hannah and Paige come on stage it lasted about an hour and 15 minutes.
Hannah and Paige sit in two chairs with a laptop on a table between them. The show is broken up into segments, like “Is he trash?” and things that cause them anxiety. The two are just as funny and entertaining in person as they are on the podcast.
They talked about visiting Salem and their experience with a psychic/witch (?) there, which is something they also discussed in their podcast. Most of the audience was women, though some brought their husbands, boyfriends, etc. It seems the content is mostly entertaining to women since I didn’t catch the men next to me with their girlfriends laughing much. Maybe they just don’t get the jokes.
No recording is allowed in the venue, so don’t expect to film any of the show. I sneaked a picture toward the end of the show before walking out. Overall, I had a fun time at the show. It’s short for a ticketed event, but it seems like a nice night out with friends. And if you are like Paige and like to be in bed early, you’ll love that it ends before 10 p.m.
I paid $84, with fees, for my ticket, which was for a seat on the main floor toward the back. Had there not been fees I’d say this is a good value, but $84 is kind of a lot in my opinion. You could of course buy seats on the balcony for less. Either way, I enjoyed the giggles.
