I had a quintessentially Chicago weekend. On Saturday, rooftop yoga and brunch were followed by a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, which was followed by dinner at Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse in River North.
I immediately loved the atmosphere. You could spend hours browsing the memorabilia-laden walls. It seemed like the perfect place for a post-game dinner.
It had been hours since my last meal. I was ravenous by the time I got my hands on a menu, so I wanted to order everything — and I don’t even eat steak. I showed some restraint by just asking for the rigatoni alla vodka and a side of mashed potatoes, because they totally go together and because I wanted all the carbs. My friends ordered a crab cake appetizer that they let me try and I was this close to eating all of it. (It costs $17 for just one crab cake; otherwise I would have ordered five.) Graham devoured every bite of his 12-ounce dry New York strip, and my friends loved their twice baked potato and respective steaks. Had I not chowed down on a basket of bread, I would have finished every bite of my rigatoni. It made an excellent second-day lunch the next day before yet another Chicago Cubs game.
Will I be back every week? My budget says no, but it’s a fun place to go to every once in a while when Graham gets tired of my meat-free dinners.
What’s your favorite dish at Harry Caray’s? Have you taken a photo with the Harry Caray bust?
