Regular exercise is good for the mind, body, and soul, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to stay motivated. If you’re struggling to make it to the gym or your running shoes are at the back of the closet, there’s a good chance you’ve lost your motivation somewhere along the line. Fortunately, you can re-incentivize yourself with these five ways to find your fitness motivation:
Dig Deep for Reasons
Before you think about what you want to achieve, think about why you want to improve your fitness. Perhaps you want to be able to play with your kids more easily or maybe you’re trying to reduce your risk factors for a particular illness? For some people, improving their fitness may be a way of losing weight and boosting their confidence. Whatever the underlying reasons are for beginning your fitness journey, remember them now and use them to stay motivated.
Set New Goals
If you’ve already hit your first set of goals, you’ll need new ones to keep you on track. However, if your original goals were a little too ambitious, you might be feeling stuck and fed up. By setting interim targets, like completing half marathons in 2021, you can re-motivate yourself and get excited about training again. It’s always easier to exercise when you have a specific goal in mind, so, set yourself targets that you really want to achieve, and you’ll find that you’re naturally eager to get going.
Forget Feeling Bad
When you fall off the fitness wagon, it’s easy to feel guilty, ashamed, and even embarrassed. However, there’s no need to dwell on the negatives. Your fitness journey is for you, so don’t let other people’s opinions get in the way of your progress. For most people, getting fitter isn’t a linear journey from A to B. Instead, it’s a winding route that features a few pitfalls and backsteps! Dust yourself off, redefine your goals and implement new strategies to help you succeed.
Start Training Outdoors
With summer approaching, now could be a great time to adapt your routine and begin training outdoors more often. While committed athletes will train outdoors in any weather, it’s easy to let the snow, rain, or cold temperatures get in the way of your routine. When you can take advantage of the sunny mornings and lighter evenings, however, you can boost your vitamin D intake and enjoy being surrounded by nature as you work towards your fitness targets.
Focus on Determination
It’s a frustrating fact that we don’t always stay motivated for long. By focusing on determination, rather than motivation, however, you can overcome these slumps and continue making progress. Maybe you won’t feel like sticking to your routine tomorrow but, if you do it anyway, you can ensure that your determination serves you well until motivation strikes once again.
Enjoying Your Fitness Journey
The more you enjoy your fitness regime, the more likely you are to stick with it. By finding sports or exercises you love, training with a friend, or even gamifying your routine, you can increase your enjoyment as you embark on the next stage of your fitness journey.
