I came across Mel Robbins’ Start Here podcast last week when searching for a new Audible listen. The podcast is an Audible Original, meaning it’s exclusive to Audible. So far there are 13 episodes available and I’ve listened to eight. I’m sharing some of my favorite takeaways from the Start Here podcast and the episodes I have found most useful.
Episode 2 focuses on friendship. I liked how she categorized the types of friends, roots, branches and leaves, and how a friend might change from a root to a branch, for example, over time. And that’s OK. She inserts research on happiness from institutions such as Harvard to show how it’s the quality of a friendship, not the quantity, that affects one’s overall happiness in life. She encourages putting effort into your roots, and I needed that reminder. I recommend this episode.
I also found Episode 4 on toxic people to be insightful. Something I had not considered is that it’s not that someone is toxic, it’s that certain behaviors are toxic. It also asks whether you might be the one exhibiting toxic behaviors by not enforcing boundaries and assuming the other people knows that something bothers you and that you want a certain boundary. “What makes a behavior toxic is when it crosses a boundary for you.”
Episode 6 on anxiety reminds us about the scientific research on anxiety that suggests the body knows no difference between anxiety and excitement. “By saying you’re excited you stabilize your body’s state, which keeps you in control of your mind.”
In the loving relationships episode (Episode 5), Mel Robbins talks about love languages and showing love to someone how they want to be loved. In addition, she lists signs of a controlling relationship, such as snooping/not allowing privacy, constant criticism not matter how small, and jealousy.
Each “Start Here” episode is about 25-30 minutes, making the series an easy listen. It’s meant to provide a starting point for when you want to improve particular parts of your life.
