My daughters and I had the opportunity to walk in the Skokie Fourth of July Parade with the local softball and baseball teams. It was our first time walking in a local parade, and I came away from the experience with some tips to help anyone else who is participating in one of these fun traditions.
Bring extra candy or giveaways
Whatever amount you think you need, bring more. Even if the candy or giveaways are provided by the village, city, or organization, you will probably need more. We found that in the excitement of the beginning of the parade, the kids tended to give out more, and we were running short by the end of the route. It doesn’t hurt to bring more of whatever you are handing out.
Arrive extra early
I had planned to arrive an hour before the parade to get to the staging area, but the village had already closed the roads on the parade route by then. Either get dropped off at the site or plan to arrive even earlier so that you can get to the starting place.
Prepare for the weather
I brought umbrellas just in case, but I would have grabbed a poncho if I had the time. Luckily it didn’t rain, but I was happy I brought one just in case. If it’s hot, be sure to hydrate and try to stay cool. Our organization had popsicles for the kids, which they appreciated.
Don’t throw things
This should be common sense, but if you’re with kids, remind them not to throw candy or other items at spectators. Remind them to hand out the candy or giveaways, or gently toss them at the ground in front of them, not directly at them.
Dress comfortably
Wear the most comfortable shoes you have and be prepared for lots of walking and standing. Make sure your outfit or accessories are not uncomfortable.
Don’t forget to smile and wave
With so much going on, it can be easy to lose sight of the experience you are in. Try to stay in the moment and smile and wave at the crowds. It’s all about having fun!
