While winter and spring hold their own charm, there’s a magic and peace that the warmer days of summer offer. Right now my family is gearing up for the season by making updates and tending to our garden. May and June are the time to prepare our homes for the summer season. It doesn’t hurt to make your house a more sustainable home while you’re at it. The idea of doing work around the house can often be tedious, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of things that can be done to spruce up your home and ensure things are safe in the heat. Here are a few things you can do:
Optimize outdoor spaces
You will be spending a lot of time outside during the summer, so it’s the perfect time to make the most of your outdoor areas. Start by cleaning your deck or patio and give the furniture a good cleaning. Add some shade solutions like umbrellas or pergolas if needed. Adding water-resistant cushions and rugs can make the place cozier and even small seasonal flowers can bring life and color to the entire area.
Think about your cooling systems
If you want to live in a comfortable home during the months, make sure your cooling systems are in the best shape possible. Schedule a professional inspection and servicing of your units, if you haven’t already. Energy-efficient fans are also a good idea if you haven’t installed them already. If you ensure that your cooling systems are ready for the summer, you will avoid any unexpected breakdowns on those extremely hot days.
Upgrade the decking outside
If you are going to be spending a lot of time outside, you will want to make sure you have up-to-date decking. If your current deck has signs of wear and tear, it might be a good idea to replace it with Trex decking or something of equal quality. We have a new deck on our home repair list and hope we can get that done soon. Using a low maintenance and high durability material would add lots of value to your home as well as make it a lovelier sight.
Enhance the energy efficiency of your home
Keep costs down by improving the energy efficiency of your home. Seal any gaps around windows and doors to prevent cool air from escaping. Take steps to insulate your attic and walls, too. Switch to LED bulbs, which generate less heat and use less energy. These kinds of measures will help to keep your home cooler throughout the summer.
