Last week I upgraded to the new Samsung S22 Ultra in burgundy. Getting a new phone feels like a holiday, even with the stress of logging back into all of apps when you have forgotten your passwords. I’m sharing my short unboxing video plus my initial thoughts on the latest Samsung model.
One of favorite aspects of the phone is the color. The burgundy suits me perfectly. I paired it with an OtterBox case in a purple-ish, burgundy-ish color that I love, too.
While I like the 6.1 inch phone, my small hands stretch quite a bit to hold it. My fingers tend to get tired after holding it for a while. It’s worth it to have a 500ppi display. It’s like when I finally upgraded my TV to HD and was shocked to be able to see everything much more clearly.
I’m also enjoying the Ultra S Pen. This is my first smartphone with a stylus pen. I didn’t think I’d use it, but I like drawing, coloring and writing with it. I also like that I can take screenshots and then make notes on them. There’s the ability to create art using coloring pages, like this one I colored of two hands making a heart shape.

The pen options, according to Samsung:
- Air view
- Live message
- Samsung Notes
- Screen off memo
- Smart select
- Screen write
- Translate
- Bixby Vision
- Glance
- Magnify
- PENUP
- Coloring
- AR Doodle
- Write on calendar
The camera features are incredible. First, the zoom is powerful. I could zoom into the city view while sitting in the passenger seat on our way back to Chicago.

I also played with hyperlapse. The night mode works wonders as well.
It has both front and rear cameras, including:
- 12MP Ultra Wide Camera
- 50MP Wide-angle Camera
- 10MP Telephoto Camera
Photographers and creators might enjoy the AR Doodles and Quick Measure and the fact that you can export RAW files, as well as:
- Format and advanced options
- (HEIF/Raw copies/UW shape correction)
- Selfie color tone
- Advanced recording options (HEVC/HDR10+/Zoom-in MIC)
- Video Stabilization (VDIS)
- Auto HDR
- Tracking auto-focus
- Grid lines
- Auto FPS
Video is just as impressive. I could shoot 8K video or 4K UHD and other options that I am not entirely sure about but sound fancy.
I also have 256 GB of storage so I can take plenty of photos and videos.
Music sounds better with Dolby Atmos technology speakers.
