It’s about that time that we start getting ready for the holidays. Pretty soon you’ll be too busy with events, dinners, and holidays that you won’t have time to take care of home-related tasks, like heating issues or dirty carpets. Here are some ways to prepare your home for the winter now so you don’t have to worry about it later:
Check the heating
Confession: We’ve already used the heater once. But at least we know it’s working.
In the dead of winter, the last thing you need is to encounter an issue with the heating; unfortunately, this is a common concern because most homeowners forget to test the heating system in the fall or early winter months. The good news is boiler checks are easy to arrange.
Unlike other systems in the home, the boiler needs to be checked by a qualified gas engineer, so leave plenty of time before the festive fun begins in case there are any repairs that are needed.
Change the lighting
A great way to make your home more festive is to change up the lighting. We like to have festive lights for Halloween and Christmas, like these rustic lanterns.

Now is the time to think about your lighting options. Warm lighting is better over the winter, but it’s good to have a wide range of options for all occasions. Also, LED lights are best; they are cheaper and eco-friendly.
You might want to swap out the bulbs in your home for LED lighting, but there are other options as well. Why not add some string lights for the season and buy some candles? Authentic candles are lovely over the winter and make a nice alternative to a fireplace.
Clean the carpets
If you have carpets in your home, have them cleaned before the holidays. Throughout the year, microscopic debris and mites build up on the carpet fiber, and even routine cleaning doesn’t always eliminate them. What you need is a deep clean carpet service to help.
It’s possible to deep clean the carpets yourself, but you will have to buy the right equipment and learn to use it properly; not only that, you will have to find a place to store the equipment throughout the year. A nice alternative is to contact experts like In Home Cleaning Services twice a year.
Stock the kitchen
Make sure you have plenty of food and drinks in the house over the holiday season. It’s nice to be able to reach for a nice drink or appetizer when friends and neighbors stop by with short notice. Start with a list of festive favorites and keep your stocks high in the winter.
If you have a stock list in your home, you can check it frequently and simply stock up on what you need. It’s also a good way to keep a budget on track.
