So, it’s been far too long since you’ve been on the open road. But the time has come. Maybe you’ve got a free weekend coming up, or you’ve managed to get some vacation days sorted out. Whether you’re planning on a short trip or a long drive, you’re going to want this to be a trip to remember, for all the right reasons. These tips can help you have the best road trip experience possible:
- Plan Ahead
A road trip is not something to jump into without any planning. Before you even decide to go on the trip, you need to figure out how much time and money you can afford to spend on the road. The longer the road trip, the more it will cost in both gas and supplies. Be generous with your calculations as well, unexpected delays and expenses can turn a relaxing and fun adventure into yet another source of stress, which nobody needs, so make sure that these potential hiccups are accounted for.
Once the timespan and budget are worked out, you can plan the journey itself. Research nearby destinations to visit and create an ideal route. Finding an appropriate map and making sure that you can read it is a must (or make sure your navigation system is set up), because getting lost on a road trip is a surefire way to run out of time and supplies. You should also determine what type of road trip you’d like to try out, whether you’re going to stick to the road itself, or perhaps divert away from the beaten path.
- Pick the Right Vehicle
It can’t be overstated how necessary the right vehicle is for a road trip. First, you need a safe and reliable car. Breaking down is a dreadful way for a road trip to end, especially if you’re miles away from civilization. Air-conditioning and plenty of space are probably the two most important things to look out for so that the journey can be fun and comfortable for everyone.
The type of car that you pick depends slightly on the type of road trip you’ve decided to take, but you can’t go wrong with a 4×4. These vehicles are usually big, comfortable, safe, and reliable. They’re also very versatile, as 4×4 wheels can drive smoothly both on the road and off-road, which is ideal if you’re more adventurously inclined.
- Bring Good Company
So, we’ve got the right car and the right route, but you’re also going to want the right company. Friends can make or break your road trip. There are a few things to bear in mind before inviting people to join you.
The most important thing is to make sure that you aren’t the only one willing, or able, to drive. This applies to longer road trips especially, as driving for hours on end without a proper break isn’t just boring and tiring, it can be dangerous. But if you can switch with one or two other drivers, the journey will go by much more smoothly and you can enjoy it all the more.
You’ll also want to make sure that everyone can afford both the time and the money for the trip, and aren’t likely to drop out at the last minute. Also, and this might be an obvious one, make sure they’re good travelers. Carsickness can ruin a road trip for the sufferer and everyone else in the car with them.
Perhaps you prefer traveling alone. If so, then you should be aware of the risks and at least make sure that people know your planned route and that you can contact them at any time. This is also true when traveling in a group.
- Stock Up On Supplies
Before you’re ready to set off, ensure that you remember needed supplies, emergency or otherwise. You should always keep a survival kit in your car, including at least a first-aid kit, blankets, and a shovel.
However, when you’re going on a longer journey, it’s wise to check your supplies and include camping gear, a change of clothes, cash, and a jerry can. Finally, don’t forget the road trip snacks and plenty of water. Hungry and thirsty travelers are unhappy travelers, and getting dehydrated on the road can be dangerous.
- Keep It Fun
Yes, with all the planning and preparation, it can be easy to forget that road trips are meant to be fun. Put together a good playlist or two that everyone in the car will enjoy and maybe even learn some games for the road. Above all else, enjoy the journey!
