Finding a career passion doesn’t happen for everyone, but there are ways to ensure you find something you love — or like — to do. From making the right connections to learning what you need to, here are some handy suggestions.
Get a feel for the experience
Many roles allow you to gain real experience before making a decision. Internships and apprenticeships allow you to see and feel what it’s like to do what you are interested in. Some require you to be in education before offering placements. However, for example, you can experience a day in the life of an EMS professional or a police officer with a ride-along. A journalist might also allow you to shadow them.
Connect with industry insiders
Making connections is a requirement for some professions. Doing this as early as possible is key. Knowing who the key players are in a given industry, sector, or single company can help you get a leg up. Just meeting them can help, but you can also get a feel for how to succeed in the field. Mentorships, shadowing, or even following someone on social media can be a massive help. Connect with people on LinkedIn after meeting them as well.

You can learn a lot about a specific role by using simulations and video games. It’s true! There are tons of people who have gone into a particular profession because of inspiration from movies and TV shows. And the same is true of video games. Games can be good for the brain. For example, MS Flight Simulator has over 15 million users. How many do you think have become pilots because of it?
Educate yourself before a decision
Simulations can help prepare you for a role. There are many academic and serious “games,” such as PC Building Simulator, Farming Simulator, and Car Mechanic Simulator, that are pretty accurate and relevant to the source material. These can help when completing academic courses and aid with practical tests. Education is often required for most professional roles these days, and that now includes policing, nursing, and many office jobs.
Create a solid progression plan
Knowing what you want to do is excellent and provides you with the drive and ambition to get there. But motivation alone isn’t all you need. Having a plan can help get you where you want to be and provides a foundation to which you can refer back. More often than not, we start at the bottom and work our way up.
