We got a bit of a preview of the Brookfield Zoo’s Ice Age Giants event while visiting earlier in March. It was almost 70 degrees, making a day at Brookfield a no-brainer. While the Ice Age Giants weren’t all set up, we could see many of the animatronic giants being placed in their spots for the displays. They weren’t fully working yet but were still fun to see.
We spotted a woolly mammoth, a saber-tooth tiger and giant ground sloth, among others. According to the Brookfield Zoo website, Ice Age Giants will feature:
- Mastodon (18 feet long)
- Woolly mammoth (15 feet tall)
- Giant ground sloths (20 feet long)
- Giant rodent (10 feet long)
- Short-faced bear (11 feet long)
- Giant ape (10 feet tall)
- Saber-toothed cat (5 feet long)
- Giant bird (12 feet tall)
You can spot the giants from now until Oct. 30, 2022.
Of course, we also saw the other, real animals.
I haven’t experienced such a beautiful day in months, and I already miss it.
One of the highlights is walking along the path next to Swan Lake. It’s not a crowded part of the zoo and it’s much quieter. It was partially frozen, and Canadian geese waddled across the ice.
Now that mask restrictions have been lifted, visitors don’t need to wear masks, but many choose to still do so indoors. We also didn’t need to make reservations anymore; we could simply show up as zoo members.
