I’m back to listening to self-development books on Audible. My latest was “Badass Habits” by Jen Sincero. The focus of “Badass Habits” is to help readers develop a good habit or get rid of a bad habit with Sincero’s tips. These habits include “spending more than you make,” an example she lists early on in the book (which seems like it’s geared toward people who are in the position of being bad at managing money rather than those who simply don’t make enough money to cover their bills). Sincero suggests to stop buying people drinks at the bar and stop shopping, etc. Despite some obvious tips for disposing of negative or unhealthy habits, she does offer some good advice.
One helpful tip Sincero emphasizes is setting healthy boundaries. People pleasers like myself can benefit from the reminder that “you are responsible to other people, you are not responsible for other people.”
You’ll notice throughout the book that Sincero stresses repeating your mantra. “Say it all day long.” She also suggests “mooching off” another habit. She suggests paying a coach to help with your desire to make swimming a habit, or paying a friend $300 every time you have a drink so that you can eventually stop. If only we all had that kind of money to spend on developing or dropping a habit.
I like the idea of attaching a new habit to a good habit you already have, sSuch as drinking water along with coffee, or before coffee, so that you are introducing the habit of hydration to your everyday life until it becomes easy. I also like the reminder to make your good habits easy to participate in while making your bad habits a “pain in the butt.” Of course she offers more specific advice that I won’t list here.
If you’re looking to develop positive habits in the new year, or to get rid of negative behaviors, you might find this book helpful.
