In honor of Earth Day, which is on April 22 this year, I’m sharing ways I plan to implement more eco-friendly practices this month. To be honest, I’ve gotten away from trying to be as green as possible in the past year, mostly out of convenience during a transitional time (after having a baby and becoming a mom of two). Now I want to get back to trying to be more green and looking for ways to reduce the waste I create. Of course, there are many other swaps I could make, but I’m beginning with these simple steps.
Green Swaps I’m Making This Month:
- Try composting. I’m currently in the research phase but I hope to start soon by buying a composter.
- Use recycled toilet paper.
- Switch to bar soap.
- Try more eco-friendly shampoo options. I tried shampoo balls from Nohbo in the past, but now the company is transitioning to shampoo drops. My order is supposed to ship sometime this summer. In the meantime, I plan to try shampoo bars once I run out of the shampoo and conditioner I use now.
- Replace plastic food storage bags with reusable options.
- Switch from plastic wrap to sustainable non-plastic food wrap.
This doesn’t mean I am going to throw out what I have now. I plan to use what I have until it’s out and then replace these items with more sustainable options.
Of course, there are many other green swaps you can easily make: Using reusable cups and mugs, bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, and using public transportation, for example. (I didn’t list those as goals because I already do them regularly.) This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive, but I hope it will inspire you to look at ways to reduce your footprint. I know I have a long way to improve, especially after taking a step backward in the last year in the name of convenience.
If you’re looking for ways to be more zero waste, there’s an audiobook I recently listened to on Audible called Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson. It provides so many ideas for reducing waste in your home. The book opened my eyes to the fact that recycling is really the least you can do. More effective ways to be eco-friendly are to reduce your consumption, reuse and repurpose items, and repair things that break or rip instead of tossing them and buying something new.
Are you taking steps to reduce your waste? Is this something you’re interested in learning about?
