If the daily grind is getting you down more often than not, then it may be worth considering a career change. Although it can be a daunting idea at first, our retirement ages are increasing all the time. So, if you are in your mid-30s, you may not even be halfway through your working life. It might be time to ask yourself whether you can continue doing the same job for the next 40 years. For many of us, changing careers will happen more than once in our lives. Here are some key signs that you need a change:
- You dread Mondays
If your alarm clock is put on snooze time after time every Monday, and you find Sunday evenings put you in a bad mood because you’re dreading heading to the office the next day, then it’s worth stepping back and having a look at your life and what’s making you so unhappy. There’s a difference between the standard Monday morning feeling of dragging your heels, and the tiredness that comes from heading to a job you hate every day.
- You have no opportunities
Maybe you have just been passed over for promotion, or maybe you’re simply in a career that’s hit a brick wall. Either way, if there isn’t any forward momentum and you are feeling like you’d like to be somewhere you can let your ambition run wild, then it’s time to move on. Whether it’s additional training somewhere like NASCLA or beginning the process of looking for openings, there’s nothing wrong with looking for opportunities. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a job that’s reached its final destination when all you want is to keep moving.
- You are jealous of friends’ opportunities
One of the hardest things to navigate in a friendship is jealousy so, if you feel the green-eyed monster flaring up every time you hear about one of your friends’ promotions, or new opportunity, then start to think about why that might be. Is it because secretly you want to be buying a work wardrobe and entering into an exciting new phase with a big salary and whole new opportunities opening up in front of you? Be happy for your friends and know you can go for new opportunities, too.
- There is something else you would rather do
Maybe it’s starting a small business, whether that’s writing a blog or selling your crafts online. Maybe it’s a career change that you’re looking for. It could even be as simple as working in the same job, but for a different company. If you’re dreaming of bigger things, or even the same size things somewhere else, then make it happen.
- You can support yourself
Finally, it’s worth having some savings in the bank before you take on a new endeavor. Even if it means staying where you are for a little longer, if you are beginning something risky (especially a new business or training) then make sure you have saved enough that, if there is a problem, you can support yourself financially. It isn’t the most fun, but knowing there’s a light at the end of the tunnel can make all the difference to how you feel.
