Keeping your home in the best condition possible is essential for maintaining its value and making sure that it serves your family well. But sometimes – as you probably know if you have owned a property for any length of time – homes can begin to fall apart. I’m sharing a home checklist to prevent some of the issues you might encounter, such as:
- Problems with the trim around the chimney
- Paint flaking off the walls
- Discolored sections of walls due to damp, mold and mildew
- Issues with water leaks and ductwork
- Siding panels falling off exterior walls
- Sagging or cracked masonry
- Water drainage issues
- Carpet damage
The list goes on and on.
Fortunately, you can stay on top of these issues by observing a proper home maintenance checklist. Here’s what to do:
Regularly Clean Your Filters
If you have a home air filtration system, that will naturally pick up particles of dust and filter them out of the air. It’s a good idea to put a filter in place since it prevents allergens from building up and it protects your interiors from contaminants. If you have air filters, remember to clean them out regularly. Failing to do so could damage your filtration system and even lead to fire. Also get air ducts cleaned regularly.
Control Moisture
As a homeowner, you also need to control moisture in your property. Lack of moisture control can attract insects and rodents. It can also lead to mold and damage to your building’s structure.
If possible, install exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Fix any leaks as quickly as you can. And get an expert to check that your basement and foundation is still keeping water out. It doesn’t always work perfectly.
Maintain Your Heating And Cooling
Getting regular AC repair or maintenance can help to maintain your heating and cooling system. Maintaining these systems regularly prevents minor damage leading to more serious failure.
Check Your Exterior Every Six Months
You also want to check the exterior of your home every six months or so. Visually inspect the area to see whether you can find any evidence of damage to siding. Also check the roofline for missing tiles or damaged masonry. If you spot any issues, solve them immediately. Leaving them will only lead to additional damage to your property.
Inspect Your Windows
Just like other parts of your home, once windows begin to fail, they do so rapidly. Small paint chips on your window frames can develop into full-on rot within a couple of seasons.
If you can, inspect your windows and check to see whether there is any damage. Look at the caulking to make sure that it forms a seal between the window unit and the rest of your property.
Inspecting windows regularly reduces drafts and prevents you from wasting money on your energy bills. Installing new windows can also reduce electric bills by keeping out the cold or hot air outside.
Vacuum Regularly
Regularly vacuuming your floors makes your home feel cozy. But it also removes particles from carpets that could damage them. If you leave dirt, pet dander and fur in carpets, it will create friction, which damages fibers over time, shortening the life of the carpet. Be sure to get the carpets professionally cleaned regularly as well.
