When it comes to hosting parties, I’m always looking for unique ideas that will make the guest of honor feel special and entertain the guests. That’s why I decided to host a luau and flamingo theme party at our local ice skating rink to celebrate my daughter’s 9th birthday. It was a fun and unexpected twist on the traditional late spring gathering.
Luau and flamingo theme party ideas
Here’s how I pulled off this memorable party:
I started by designing fun and colorful invitations that featured images of flamingos and tropical flowers. I included all of the important details, such as the date, time, location, and RSVP deadline.
Looking back, it would be smarter to include that we would be paying for the ice-skate rentals for guests if they did not have their own. I would also suggest that guests bring jackets because it gets chilly on the ice.
To transform the party room at the ice skating rink into a tropical paradise, we purchased inflatable beach balls, tropical table covers and flamingo decorations. We gave each guest leis and hung a photo backdrop with the word Aloha and flamingos.
I found flamingo cutouts, a banner, and napkins at Dollar Tree, along with a couple small tinsel flamingos. Our tablecover and helium-filled flamingo balloons were from Party City. I found a small flamingo at Michael’s that I put on the ice cream cake.
Food and drinks
For the food and drinks, I went with pizza and fruit punch juice. In a perfect world, I would have made fruit skewers with pineapple, mango, and kiwi, and offered savory options like coconut shrimp. Our time in the party room was limited, so we only had enough time for pizza and cupcakes.
For our at-home celebration, we had an Oreo ice-cream cake from Cold Stone. I originally ordered a flamingo image on the cake, but the order was not ready when I arrived at pickup and I was offered this instead, along with a discount.
The main activity, of course, was ice skating. Everyone had a blast gliding around the rink in their Hawaiian leis. We had the small, private practice rink to ourselves for 1 hour for the party. We also had six skate guards for the new skaters.
I made a flamingo SVG on Canva that I printed on transfer paper and ironed onto white shirts.
Overall, hosting a luau and flamingo theme party at Skatium, our local ice skating rink was a unique and memorable experience. It combined our ice-skatin hobby with a summer-esque theme.
