After seeing Hello Fresh meals just about everywhere online, I was persuaded to try them. Countless influencers share their promo codes that make your first few boxes more affordable, and I took advantage of one of those deals to get $20 off my first orders.
I chose the vegetarian meal plan for two people with three recipes per week, which works out to $8.99 per serving plus a $6.99 shipping charge. For my first order I received free shipping so the box was around $33. The regular price is around $53 though. The veggie plan only comes with a three recipe option, unlike the classic option, which allows you to choose among two, three or four recipes. You can also choose to get boxes weekly, biweekly or monthly.
My first week of Hello Fresh meals came with three recipes:
- Harissa Sweet Potato Pita Pockets: This was a great lunch option for my 4-year-old daughter and me one day during the week. My 11-month-old enjoyed the sweet potatoes as well. I liked the actual pita pocket more than the cucumber dill salad. The recipe used harissa to create a mayo that you spread on the inside of the pita. Yum! My daughter loved the salad!
2. Cheese Tortelloni in a Mushroom Sauce: I didn’t think I would enjoy this because I am not a huge mushroom fan, but it was delicious! I liked the chili flakes that added more flavor, too.
3. Mediterranean Baked Veggies: This was my favorite meal and my family enjoyed it, too. The combination of the feta, almonds, veggies and couscous was perfect. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I wish I had a bigger portion of this!
I liked the recipes, though I wish I could have figured out how to change the options in my menu. I could not figure it out (even though I’m sure it’s easy and I was just in a rush) and just went with the options given to me. I would have skipped the mushroom dish but I actually ended up liking it! While I liked the meals, my 4-year-old didn’t end up eating everything in the meals (which is to be expected for someone her age), so I am not sure if it will always make sense to order Hello Fresh. I decided to try it a couple more times on a monthly basis to see whether we will keep our subscription. It was nice to not have to think about what to make for lunch or dinner during the busy workweek and I am not much of a meal planner yet. The nice part is you can pause your membership if the budget doesn’t allow a meal delivery service.
Based on my experience with this type of service, I know that ordering will create some waste. Hello Fresh bags remind you to reuse them, but all the other ingredients are often in a small package that will ultimately be thrown away. That’s something to consider. According to the website, Hello Fresh’s liners are made from FSC-certified sustainable cardboard and pulper-safe film and are fully recyclable. The ice packs are made “with a non-toxic salt solution. You can re-use them for a picnic or in a lunch box.”
