I was unsure whether we’d visit a pumpkin farm in 2020 because I doubted we’d be able to keep our distance, but a neighbor told me about Kroll’s Fall Harvest Farm in Waukegan. Kroll’s was offering timed entry tickets to help make social distancing possible and avoid crowds. We visited on Halloween at the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. time slot.
With timed tickets, you can visited during those hours only. We arrived to see the farm was not crowded at all. We paid for full farm access, which means we can pick a pumpkin, ride the hayride wagon, participate in the corn maze game, visit the farm animals and of course shop the concessions. The tickets were $10 each for age 3 and older.
Masks were required to visit in 2020, and everyone we saw abided by the rule. We began our visit by visiting the chickens, which are sometimes allowed to roam free. Next we saw the rabbit named Onyx before going to visit the goats and alpacas. Hands must be sanitized before and after feeding the goats, if you choose to do so. The cereal was 25 cents for a handful.
Next we entered the corn maze. To play the game, you will hear instructions from the farm employee and then receive a game card. You scan QR codes with your phone camera to record your answers and hear instructions. We found the corn maze to be the only place where it can be tricky to maintain a distance. Most people did well, but some were impatient and came up too close behind us. We did our best to let them pass so we could distance ourselves.
We ended our visit to Kroll’s Fall Harvest Farm by paying for our pumpkins. Pumpkin doughnuts and other concessions were available, but I wished they had apple cider doughnuts. Maybe next time!
While the fall activities closed Nov. 1, Kroll’s will soon have fresh-cut Christmas trees.
