According to research by the University of California, 33% of the students felt they didn’t know how to sit down on their own and study. When you take into consideration the many distractions presented to students outside of the classroom, this doesn’t sound too surprising. However, throughout your life, you may need to study for something. Do you have trouble concentrating while learning? Below are a few smart tips to help you study.
Try not to multitask
Even though multitasking may come naturally to you, it is best to stop yourself from doing it, especially when preparing for an exam, since it can make you less productive. This is because sometimes multitasking can cause you to give less focus to the tasks at hand since your mind gets clouded and moves back and forth. So, to be able to focus and study well, it is better to have a plan. This should include separate time for studies, breaks, chores, exercise, etc. Time blocking ensures you will be able to give your best when it is time for each activity.
Take online courses and pay attention during each session
You may want to consider registering for online courses that give you access to extra content and even trial questions to help you prepare for your exam. For example, a platform such as UWorld Legal provides both law students and professionals preparing for the bar exam with an online review course, making learning materials more accessible. However, during each online lesson, be sure to take notes and do away with anything that might distract you throughout the period. Such distractions could be from your phone or notifications from your computer, so be sure to adjust your settings before starting every session.
Create a study area for yourself
Your study area could be a chair and a study table set up in the corner of a room or a more significant space designation if you can afford it. The whole idea behind having a study area is not just about physically designating the area to study but also psyching yourself mentally to respect it as your study area.
Try to have a chair that allows you to sit up straight and can support your back so you have the proper posture while studying. This will also prevent you from getting too relaxed and dozing off. When you have a designated study area separate from other relaxation areas, it causes your mind to concentrate whenever you sit down to study thoroughly. And you are also able to let go of the stress related to studies simply by exiting your study area. ALso, try not to study in bed so that your mind can train itself to only rest in that space, and not think about studying.
Different situations call for different responses, and additionally, different strategies may work for different people. You may find yourself in a case where you have to resort to studying from home or studying remotely, especially during this pandemic. Even though it may come across as a difficult task, the above general tips may help to ease the process for you.
